In the following mishap, a nine-year old child crossed the road at the traffic lights and ended up in hospital. A combination of factors, bad timing, lack of visibility and a driver, who didn't anticipate, all contributed to the crash.

1. Don't walk! Wrong time to walk! The child had started to cross the road, despite the lights flashing “Don’t walk”.

2. The truck is waiting as the light is still on red. The lights are about to turn green. The child is still crossing. All green for the car to go!.

The truck driver has full view. He sees the child still crossing and waits. Not so the approaching car in the left lane. He did not expect anybody to be still crossin

3. Never assume that on green it's all clear. expect the UNEXPECTED!

The average driver's reaction time, after taking notice of an emergency, is 3/4 second. At 40 km/h his vehicle travelled 8.33 meters in this short time span. This was before the motorist even applied the brakes.
