In the following mishap,
a nine-year old child crossed the road at the traffic lights and ended up
in hospital. A combination of factors, bad timing, lack of visibility and
a driver, who didn't anticipate, all contributed to the crash.

Don't walk! Wrong
time to walk! The child had started to
cross the road, despite the lights flashing “Don’t walk”.

2. The truck is waiting
as the light is still on red. The lights are about to turn green. The
child is still crossing.
All
green for the car to go!.
The truck driver has
full view. He sees the child still crossing and waits. Not so the
approaching car in the left lane. He did
not expect anybody to be still crossin

3. Never
assume that on green it's all clear. expect the UNEXPECTED!
The
average driver's reaction time, after taking notice of an
emergency, is 3/4 second. At 40 km/h his
vehicle travelled 8.33 meters in this short time span. This was before
the motorist even applied the brakes. |
