A.9  ONE-WAY -  two mistakes

No. 1 mistake in a one-way street is not recognizing it (having missed the signs) and driving in the wrong direction. Never assume a narrow street is one-way or a wide road two-way. Even multi-lane roads are often one-way.

To recognize, if a road is one-way, check against one or more of these factors:

1. All traffic is moving in one direction.

2. Parked vehicles are all facing into one direction.

3. Directional arrows ( painted on the roadway) point in one direction.

4. Signs (one way, no entry, all traffic left, no right/left turn).

If you find yourself in a one-way street going the wrong way, reduce speed and stop.

Put on your hazard lights and find a suitable spot to turn around, unless reversing is a better option. (Usually it is not).

The parked cars and directional arrows indicate this is One Way.

Mistake No. 2 is ...

... turning from the incorrect lane!

The driver in the left lane had too much to drink and does not recognize the one-way street. He turns right dangerously from the left lane!

The van driver in the right-hand lane is caught completely by surprise.

A right turn must be commenced from the right-hand lane. Change to the right hand lane early, in preparation to make a right-hand turn.

There is an exception to this rule:

When traffic volume makes it necessary, often two lanes will be turning right or left. If so, a right hand turn may be commenced from the left lane, or vice versa. Be careful to observe traffic beside you. Should a vehicle move straight, instead of turning, a collision may occur.
