The cab-drill is
the logical procedure to prepare yourself and the vehicle
before moving off into traffic. It is especially
important after another person has used the vehicle. Drivers who failed to prepare before take-off,
will become distracted, if they need to make adjustments while moving in traffic.
Such distractions
are a common cause of crashes.
There
are 12 items in the cab-drill, four categories, each consists of
three
basic tasks:
A After entering
the car:
1.
Lock doors, locate controls.
2.
Ensure handbrake is on.
3.
Ensure gearlever is in neutral
C
Prepare the vehicle:
1.
*Start engine.
2.
**Select gear.
3.***Unlock ratchet/handbrake.
B
Prepare yourself:
1.
Adjust seating.
2.
Adjust mirrors.
3.
Fasten seatbelt.
DPrepare for traffic:
1.
Check mirrors.
2.
Indicate (blinker).
3.
Shoulder check (blind spot).
*At
this point check
warning lights and gauges (fuel). You must at this point know
where to find the indicator switch, hazard lights, horn
and windscreen wipers).
**In an
automatic vehicle, foot must be firmly on brake!
***To
unlock ratchet pull handbrake lever up a little, press button
and hold! (Late model vehicles and others may have different
handbrake systems.)

Know
the vehicle you are driving. In an emergency it is too late
to search for the horn. The activating button may not be found in the in
the centre of the steering wheel!
