23. Drink Driving - (DUI)

Imagine on a very hot, windy day in the middle of summer and someone decides to build a fire in a forest. How foolish, you agree? It is just as stupid to drink excessively then 'drive under the influence' (DUI).

One night of wild drinking, not thinking, could imprison you or an innocent, unfortunate victim into a wheelchair - for life. A sobering thought: After obtaining a driver's licence anyone has the capacity to kill another human being without meaning to!

Q. How does alcohol affect a driver?

A. Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Vital functions to perform these ordinary tasks are affected:

1. Co-ordination - slow to brake or steer.

2. Judgement - fails to give way,  side-swipes objects or hits kerb.

3. Reaction - late reaction to emergencies, ignoring other traffic and warning signs.

4. Vision - blurred vision causes confusion, increased risk of crashing.

Apart from these handicaps some drinkers display a false sense of bravado and get overconfident. Many fool themselves, believing that

...drinking black coffee

... eating greasy foods

... taking cold showers or fresh air,

is going to fix the problem.

Nothing can speed up the process of sobering. Time is the only factor that reduces the level of alcohol in the blood to render a person fit to drive!

Damage to public property must be paid for by the driver at fault. DUI can be a very costly mistake, if your insurance company does not pay for the damage!

Ladies get affected much quicker than men and can tolerate less alcohol in the blood. Likewise, small people get intoxicated quicker and affected more. Before consuming any alcoholic drink a responsible driver knows, how much alcohol is his or her limit. Play it safe, if unsure! Drink less or better ZERO.

Two glasses of beer in an hour can bring a driver to 0.05 promille BAC (blood alcohol content). One drink every hour after that maintains this limit. In some countries new drivers must have zero alcohol in their blood when driving. (Check the laws in your country).

Driving under the influence of DRUGS is also emerging as a major cause of erratic, dangerous behaviour on our roads. Alcohol and drugs combined form a very lethal dose to render a motorist unfit to get behind a wheel.

Know what medications may affect you. Check with your doctor, if not sure!

Think before you drink...!

How will you get home from the party?

Is public transport available?

Can you get a lift with someone (sober!)

Will you get a taxi or get picked up?

ONE DRINK affects your driving.

TWO DRINKS pushes you to the limit.

One night's foolishness has ended great dreams of many bright, talented young people.

Don’t risk it.

Don't ruin yours and other people’s future. Be a responsible driver.
