It is tragic how
many animals are killed and cause road crashes on country roads the
world over. A large animal in the path of an unsuspecting driver
often results in serious injury or damage. Nobody likes to think
this is acceptable, but is trying to save a rabbit, a dog or cat
worth risking human lives?
A
natural reaction, when startled by an animal is to
swerve around it. DON'T
DO IT !
|
If you swerve, the
animal may run into your path; you will injure it anyway. Swerving
is a high risk business, especially in wet weather, on a dirt road
or at high speed. Even if you could swerve to miss the animal, there
is the additional danger of overcorrecting and losing control of the
vehicle. (See section 31.)
Steering around the
animal to the right is risking a head-on crash with oncoming
traffic. The
faster you travel, the less you can afford to respond by steering
out of trouble.
