30. ANIMALS ON ROAD

It is tragic how many animals are killed and cause road crashes on country roads the world over. A large animal in the path of an unsuspecting driver often results in serious injury or damage. Nobody likes to think this is acceptable, but is trying to save a rabbit, a dog or cat worth risking human lives?

A natural reaction, when startled by an animal is to swerve around it. DON'T DO IT !

If you swerve, the animal may run into your path; you will injure it anyway. Swerving is a high risk business, especially in wet weather, on a dirt road or at high speed. Even if you could swerve to miss the animal, there is the additional danger of overcorrecting and losing control of the vehicle. (See section 31.)

Steering around the animal to the right is risking a head-on crash with oncoming traffic.  The faster you travel, the less you can afford to respond by steering out of trouble.

When an animal gets in the way do these simultaneously:

 BLAST your horn loudly

LOOK in the rear view mirror

 BRAKE safely!

A very large animal may not be able to move out of the way quick enough. Driving around it may be the only option, if safe to do so?

But above steps must still be the initial response.

<<< Wildlife victim:

The animal was still breathing when the photo was taken.

The motorist may not have seen the animal early enough on the crest of the hill.

The vehicle speed must have been too high to stop within the seeing distance. (See also Section 33).
