ONE-WAY - two mistakes |
The
most dangerous blunder when driving in a one-way street is to not
recognizing it, entering the wrong way! It happens to drivers, who miss
directional signs or just assume it's two-way because the road is wide
or multi-lane. Wide roads can be one-way, narrow roads two-way
traffic.
|
4
Things to recognize a one-way street: |
1. All
traffic
is moving in one direction. Caution:
Pedestrians may step onto roadway unexpectedly!
2. Look
for signs:
One way, No Entry, All traffic (left or right) No
Right Turn / Left Turn!
|
 |
3.
Parked vehicles are
all facing in one direction.
4. Directional arrows painted
on the roadway point in one direction.
|

|
|
If you find
yourself driving in a one-way street going the wrong way, stop immediately.
(No need to look in the mirror;
nobody should be there!)
Switch
on your hazard lights and find a suitable spot to turn around,
unless reversing to a safe spot is a better option.

Mistake
two: Turning from incorrect lane:
|
This
van driver in the right-hand lane is caught completely
by surprise. >>>
The
sedan in the left lane did not recognize the one-way
traffic. The driver incorrectly turned, since there was no oncoming
traffic.
In a
multi-lane road never turn right from the left lane,
only from the right hand lane. |

|
There
is an exception to this rule >>>
Painted
arrows allow turning right from either
lane!
If
you are turning
right from the left lane you must still
take care and ensure no traffic on the right continues
straight ahead. Expect the unexpected!

<<<
Two lanes are exiting the motorway. Drivers must be
aware in which lanes they are in and select the
appropriate lane early. (See Section 10 Roundabouts) |
In
large cities, negotiating multi-lane roads (one way
traffic), takes two skills every safe driver must have:
1.
Observation - read signs carefully. Watch traffic around
you.
2.
Anticipation - select correct lane early.
